The Brazilian-born Baccarin, age thirty-three, was until recently — and maybe still is — best known for her role on the short-lived 2009 ABC series V, on which she played the doe-eyed, pixie-cut alien queen with an excellent Q rating. And removable skin. It's her iconic role to date, save perhaps her part on the culty Firefly, which turned the heads of a thousand, thousand fanboys. "It's a coincidence," she says of starring in two major science-fiction projects. "I really look for strong female characters, or weak female characters, for that matter — something defined, tucked inside a great story. Reading V gave me straight-out goosebumps. You know, not knowing who your neighbors are, discovering that you live in an occupied state. Firefly I grabbed. We all thought it would last."

Battlestar Galactica Bad Ass Beauty Lands Lead In New Series!
Tricia Helfer has landed the lead in the ABC Pilot "Killer Women'"
Former Battlestar Galactica badass Tricia Helfer has landed the lead in Killer Women, ABC’s drama pilot about the only female in the male-dominated Texas Ranger Division, TVLine has learned.
Based on the Argentine seriesMujeres Asesinas, the project — which counts Modern Family‘s Sofia Vergara among its producers — finds Helfer playing Molly Parker, a beautiful and ballsy Ranger who knows how to get the truth and isn’t afraid to ruffle a few feathers on her way there.
Hannah Shakespeare (The Playboy Club) penned the script.
Helfer’s post-BSG credits include Dark Blue, The Firm, Two and a Half Men, Criminal Minds and this week’sCommunity.
Mujeres Asesinas ("Killer Women") is an Argentine drama and suspense thriller TV series, based on an acclaimed trilogy of books of the same name by Marisa Gristein.
I have one thing to say about this: What took so long?
Tricia is not only beautiful, she's talented! When Battlestar Galactica ended I felt sure she'd be a lead or co-lead in series television in no time. But it hasn't happened--until now! It's not as if she's being twiddling her thumbs--she's very active in charities of many sorts and she's had some nice guest roles as well as quite a bit of voiceover work. But as much as I love hearing her I want to see her, too! So this is about the best news I could ask for today. Trica Helfer is back!
“I’ve always been at war with myself, for right or wrong,” the actor, who will star in World War Z next, admits. “I don’t know how to explain it more. There’s that constant argument going on in your head about this or that. It’s universal. Some people are better at dealing with it, and they sleep with no pain — not pain, arguments. I’ve grown quite comfortable with being at war.”
DEPRESSION, POT AND HOW HE GOT THROUGH IT While Pitt’s star ascended with 1992’s A River Runs Through It, 1994’s Legends of the Fall and 1995’s Seven, his personal life declined.“I got really sick of myself at the end of the 1990s: I was hiding out from the celebrity thing; I was smoking way too much dope; I was sitting on the couch and just turning into a doughnut; and I really got irritated with myself,” he says. “I got to: ‘What’s the point? I know better than this.’ ... A trip to Casablanca, Morocco, in the mid-to-late 1990s, “where I saw poverty to an extreme I had never witnessed before, and we talked about inequality and health care, and I saw just what I felt was so unnecessary, that people should have to survive in these circumstances — and the children were inflicted with a lot of deformities, and things that could have been avoided had become their sentence. It stuck with me.” Almost overnight, he decided something had to give. “I just quit. I stopped grass then — I mean, pretty much — and decided to get off the couch.”
PITT ON POLITICS Jodi Kantor’s new book The Obamas describes Pitt as “awkward” in a meeting with the president. “I probably was — you don’t want to impose on a busy man,” he says. But, he’s more interested in Obama himself, particularly whether the commander in chief has stopped smoking, as Pitt would dearly like to do. While backing Obama, he nonetheless was glued to the Republican debate Jan. 19. “I’m an Obama supporter, no question,” he says. “But it doesn’t mean there’s nothing to learn from the other side.”
PITT ON RELIGION All his life, Pitt has learned from the other side. That’s what led him to make a leap of non-faith when he rejected his Southern Baptist upbringing. “I grew up very religious, and I don’t have a great relationship with religion,” he reflects. “I oscillate between agnosticism and atheism.” Pitt says differences over religion make his parents, William and Jane, "sad, but I have parents that love me unconditionally."
GETTING MARRIED: "WE'D LIKE TO" He oscillates, too, on the subject of whether he’ll get married, and it’s clear Pitt has shifted from his promise that this won’t happen until gay marriage is legalized. “We’d actually like to,” he says of his seven-year partner, Jolie, “and it seems to mean more and more to our kids. We made this declaration some time ago that we weren’t going to do it till everyone can. But I don’t think we’ll be able to hold out. It means so much to my kids, and they ask a lot. And it means something to me, too, to make that kind of commitment.” Has he asked Jolie to marry him? “I’m not going to go any further,” says Pitt. “But to be in love with someone and be raising a family with someone and want to make that commitment and not be able to is ludicrous, just ludicrous.”
WEST HOLLYWOOD, CA - NOVEMBER 04: Actress Cynthia Addai-Robinson arrives at the Breakthrough Brit Week, Breakthrough Brits Gala Reception at The London Hotel on November 4, 2009 in West Hollywood, California.
EW has exclusively learned that Cynthia Addai-Robinson is the new Naevia, who you’ll recall fell in love with gladiator Crixus during season one. and is now on the run with Spartacus and the revolting slaves for season two. When we left off at season's end Naevia had been beaten she had been cast out of the House of Batiatus by a jealous Lucretia with Naevia's whereabouts unknown.
Addai-Robinson was previously in ABC’s Flash Forward and appeared in shows like CSI: NY and and Numbers
I've been looking forward to more of 'Naevia' in Season 2 of Spartacus: Blood & Sand as I've followed the current 6-segment prequel, 'Gods of the Arena.' This is kind of last minute since production on season 2 is ramping up but if the news is to be believed (and there's no reason to disbelieve it) Starz policy does not 'lock' actors into a 4-year contract upon being cast as a series regular, the way series TV traditionally does. I suppose all there is to do is to wish Leslie-Ann Brandt the best of luck!
Spartacus will not be the only recast role on the second season of Starz's flagship seriesSpartacus: Blood and Sand. I hear Lesley-Ann Brandt, who plays Naevia, body slave to Lucretia (Lucy Lawless) and lover of Crixus (Manu Bennett) on the first season of the show and in the prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, has decided not to renew her contract and won't return for season 2.
Brandt just started a recurring role onCSI: NY and opted to also pursue broadcast pilots, which are currently casting. The part of Naevia, a fan favorite, will now be recast. Starz is known as being less restrictive in its actors contracts, which allowed Jane Lynch to leave Party Down when she was cast in Fox's Glee.
Season 2 of Spartacus: Blood and Sand will also introduce Liam McIntyre as the new Spartacus. He replaced ailing original star Andy Whitfield. Production on the second season of the sword-and-sandal drama is slated to begin shortly.
Meet Gannicus, a true physical specimen, fearless in the arena and possessed by a thirst for the fleeting pleasures of life. Premieres Jan 21st 10pm e/p on Starz http://www.starz.com/spartacus
Liam McIntyre, an Australian actor who starred in HBO's The Pacific, has been tapped to replace Andy Whitfield in Spartacus: Blood and Sand, Starz announced Monday.
McIntyre, 28, steps into the role after Whitfield was forced to drop out after being diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma. Production on the Starz series was initially halted in March. After his cancer resurfaced, Whitfield was forced to drop out to resume aggressive treatment.
"Since no one can really replace Andy, we realized that we should instead find an actor who can truly lead Spartacus forward,"
-Starz President Chris Albrecht
"It was important to us to have Andy endorse the idea of recasting this part, which he did in the same heroic manner that he's dealt with his whole ordeal. And that, coupled with our fortune in finding a young actor with the gladiator credentials and the acting ability of Liam, makes it easier for us to keep this hit franchise going."
Production on the second season of Spartacus is slated to resume by spring. Starz will air the prequel series, titled Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, starting Friday at 10/9c.
Spartacus: Blood and Sand creator Steven. S. DeKnight wants Andy Whitfield's fans to know the actor is actively fighting the disease.
"Andy of course is being very private about his condition and what he's going through with his family," DeKnight said Tuesday to discuss the prequel Spartacus: Gods of the Arena. "It's been a little while, but the last thing I heard was that he was attacking it like a true champion. I have the utmost faith that he will pull through with flying colors."
The 36-year-old Whitfield has been battling non-Hodgkin's lymphoma, forcing him to drop out of the Starz series in September.
Liam McIntyre was recently announced as Whitfield's replacement as the titular gladiator.
"We're all just praying for him," Manu Bennett, who plays fellow gladiator Crixus, said. "When the cancer has moved on as it has, it's a bigger battle for him. I can't tell you how deeply saddened(sic) it has been for all of us to know that our friend, our colleague, our inspiration has been given such a challenge. It's going to be a longer period of time before any of us know what is going to be the result with Andy right now. All communications would indicate that he's in very high spirits and that he's fighting this thing with as much strength as he fought [with] on the show."
In the meantime, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena will premiere the first of six episodes Friday at 10/9c.
The series focuses on Batiatus (John Hannah) before his ludus becomes a contender in the gladiator tournaments and Crixus before he becomes a fighting champion. In the spring, production will begin on the second season of Spartacus: Blood and Sand.
"The only juice I'll give you is that it's extra sweet," DeKnight said. "Season 2 is shaping up to be a hell of a ride. We're actually about halfway through figuring [it] out. We're obviously deeply saddened that Andy couldn't continue with us. He was a huge part of the show's success. We wish him the best and a speedy recovery."
As for Whitfield's replacement, DeKnight said they did "an exhaustive search to find somebody not to replace Andy but to step into the role of Spartacus. We feel very fortunate that we were able to find Liam, who we felt really embodied everything we were looking for in the character looking forward."
Source: Today's News: Our Take - Spartacus' Andy Whitfield Attacking Cancer "Like a True Champion"
In a bit of anti-climatic & unfortunate news, Starz has announced it's intention to recast the role of Spartacus after Andy Whitfield's sudden announcement in mid-September of his need to permanently leave the show as he continues to battle Hodgkin's disease which previously was thought to be in remission.
According to the just-released casting notice, producers are searching for a Caucasian male in his mid to late 30s to play the “smart, intense, passionate” title role. Interested parties must have an authentic British accent and be prepared to sign a three-year contract.
Whitfield was forced to bow out of the show’s second season after doctors advised him to resume “aggressive treatment” for Non-Hodgkin lymphoma.
"Spartacus: Blood and Sand" star Andy Whitfield will not return for the series' second season due to a recurrence of cancer. Starz said Friday that the actor has been advised by doctors to "resume aggressive treatment" for his illness, and that he won't part of the show when it returns to the cable channel in September 2011.
Whitfield was diagnosed with non-Hodgkin's lymphoma in March 2010. Production on the drama's freshman season was halted while the actor received medical care.
No decisions have been made about the future of the series.
Starz will air a "Blood and Sand" prequel, titled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," in January 2011.
Starz's full press release on Whitfield's condition can be found below:
Andy Whitfield, star of Starz's "Spartacus: Blood and Sand," has been advised by his doctors to immediately resume aggressive treatment for a recurrence of cancer, as a result of which he will not be returning for the series' second season, which was tentatively set to air in September 2011.
"It's with a deep sense of disappointment that I must step aside from such an exceptional project as Spartacus‚ and all the wonderful people involved. It seems that it is time for myself and my family to embark on another extraordinary journey. Thank you sincerely for the support so far," said Whitfield.
"Our hearts and prayers are with Andy and his family during this difficult time," said Starz President and CEO Chris Albrecht. "Andy is not only an incredible actor whose portrayal of Spartacus made an indelible impression on Starz audiences, he is also an amazing human being whose courage, strength, and grace in the face of adversity have inspired all of us."
No decisions have yet been made about the future of the series. "Right now, we just want to extend our concern and support to Andy and his family," said Carmi Zlotnik, Managing Director, Starz Media. "We will address our programming plans at some later date."
Starz still plans to air the prequel to "Spartacus: Blood and Sand" in January 2011. Entitled "Spartacus: Gods of the Arena," it focuses on the House of Batiatus before Spartacus arrives in Capua and stars returning cast members John Hannah, Lucy Lawless, Peter Mensah and Manu Bennett, along with newcomer Dustin Clare.
Ausiello: Casting scoop! Acting vet James Cosmo has booked a
six-episode arc as Father Kellan Ashby, an Irish Catholic priest who
takes a confession and is eventually forced to condone the ultimate
punishment.
I've not ever heard of James Cosmo until now. Apparently Ausiello hadn't either seeing as though he had his last name botched. Google was kind enough to suggest this guy. Does he look like a stereotypical Irish Catholic priest? Um, only totally!
Rex Features
Stephen King has landed a
guest role on Sons Of Anarchy.
The author signed up for
the appearance after producers learned that he is a fan of the show, Entertainment
Weekly reports.
King, who will star in the third
season of the show, is expected to play a 'quiet loner' who
appears when Gemma (Katey Sagal) needs help.
He will join the
cast for the third episode of the season, which is scheduled to begin on
FX in September.
This is pretty cool news. Do you think though that is going to be much of a stretch for Stephen King to play a 'quiet loner'?
Hal Holbrook has also signed
up for a guest spot in the show.
The Emmy Award winning actor will guest star in the third season of the
FX series, which will air in September.
Holbrook will play the
part of Nate Madock, the father of Katey Sagal's character Gemma Teller
Morrow, in the motorcycle outlaw drama.
The 85-year-old will
appear in four episodes of the show, which went back into production in late April.
The series, which also stars Ron Perlman, is ranked the
highest-rated single season of an FX show in the network's history.
I didn't even know Hal Holbrook was still alive! He is the shizz!! Ever see him as Mark Twain? When I picture Mark Twain I picture Holbrook! Wonderful that he's getting four eppys!
